What are the types of lawyers?
Simply put, the word ‘lawyer’ is a general term applying to people licensed to practise the law. However, there are distinctions to be made within this generic term, and it is useful to understand them.
Of course, these distinctions vary depending on your jurisdiction. For example, the names to describe lawyers in the United States or South Africa are different from those used in the UK.
We have used the two well-known types of lawyer – barrister and solicitor – and we have also included ADR practitioners as the law often requires that you use one of these before taking your case further.
