Norfolk is a county in the east of England, lying in the north of the rump traditionally referred to as East Anglia. It borders Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire to the west and south west and Suffolk to the south. Its northern and eastern boundaries are the North Sea coast and to the north west an area known as The Wash. The county is home to some 850,000 inhabitants. The county town of Norfolk is Norwich, which is home to 130,000 people, not including those living outside the city but within the surrounding urban areas. Norfolk’s flat, low lying and well irrigated land has been a prime site for agriculture for centuries. Today key crops include sugar beet, wheat, barley and oil seed rape. Agriculture and food processing still accounts for over 20% of the total employment in the region. The area is not limited to farming however, and employs large numbers in financial services, insurance and construction. Television and media also play an important role, with BBC East being based in the city of Norwich.
