Inverness-shire is a historical county of Scotland, which was abolished in 1975 when the county area was divided between the two-tier Highland region and the Western Isles. In 1996, the eight divisions of the county were remerged as the council area known as Highlands. The main town in the region is the new city of Inverness, formed by letter patent which were sealed in 2001. In 2007, the region was further divided into three corporate management areas, with one covering Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey.

Many of the traditional industries have now gone, but forestry, agriculture and fisheries still play a vital role to the local economy. Inverness-shire also boasts a good proportion of high tech industries, including several companies linked to pharmaceuticals.
