Solicitors in Gloucester

Situated on the border between England and Wales, and lying along the eastern bank of the River Severn is the city of Gloucester, the county town of Gloucestershire. It was founded by the Romans in 97 AD but not chartered until 1155 by King Henry II. Its location and access to the Bristol Channel allowed Gloucester to develop as a key port, linked to the Severn Estuary by the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.

The town’s significance as a port waned in the last century, with the docks falling into disrepair, but renovation and modernisation has seen the whole docks area restored as a working marina, with bars, cafes and restaurants complimented by art galleries and small enterprises. The area is also now home to the National Waterways Museum and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum.

Gloucester has had a long history in the world of aviation. The Gloucester Aircraft Company produced the Hawker Hurricane World War Two fighter and later, Britain’s first jet aircraft. Aviation plays a small but significant part in the economy of the area today, with propellers and landing gears made in factories on the outskirts of the city. The area also houses major financial institutions such as the Cheltenham and Gloucester mortgage lender, and the retail park on the outskirts of town plays home to other big brands including Fortis Insurance and BAE Detica.
