Road accidents

In 2008 alone, there were a total of 230,905 road casualties in accidents reported in the UK, according to the Department for Transport.

Road accidents include not only collisions between drivers of two vehicles, but also accidents that may also occur between drivers and other road users such as pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

They can also occur with no other road user involved, due to:

  • Slippery surfaces
  • Bad weather
  • Other hazards

If you have had a road accident and suffered personal injury or damage to your property, you may be able to make a claim for compensation. There are many aspects to consider in making a claim (or defending a claim) – we have set out the main principles here.

If you have broken road rules in the course of your accident, you also need to consider the criminal law implications which you can find in the Motoring section in our Criminal law section.
