The LLM in environmental law
An environmental law LLM is a postgraduate master’s qualification in law. The environmental LLM is becoming more popular across the globe due to increases in the demands for lawyers to specialise in this type of law. Not only is it an area of law in its own right, but environmental law is relevant to almost every other area of law as well.
The environmental law LLM allows a student to immerse themselves in the study of environmental law and to study outside the field of English Law. Environmental law can be found in many areas of case law and legislative law both domestically and internationally. A student who undertakes the environmental law LLM must therefore be good at researching and finding law.
The content of study for an environmental law LLM in England will include a historic look at the development of environmental law, as well as looking at issues that have only recently become necessary to legislate on. For example, reducing greenhouses gasses is a topic that has had media attention for decades; it has also been legislated on internationally, domestically and within Europe. Conversely, genetically modified crops are a relatively recent concept and law on this issue will be less well developed.
It is possible to study law on the environment across the globe as so much of the law and policy comes from the international community. However, studying outside Europe may mean that you are not made aware of the wealth of legislation and case law that comes from Europe.
