Student Visa

There are two types of student visa: one for adults wishing to enrol in post-16 education and one for children who wish to enrol in school. The system for students to come to the UK is now called Tier 4. Tier 4 comes under the points based system so an applicant must score points in order for their application to be accepted by the Home Office and receive a student visa. The applicant will score points by having enough money to fund their stay in the UK and for doing a course at an appropriate level with an approved education provider. An approved education provider is one which has been pre-approved by the Home Office as legitimate and will have duties to the Home Office such as reporting any absences.

Applications for extension of stay as a student and applications made before April 2009 come under different rules which can be complex so it always best to consult with an immigration solicitor. An application under Tier 4 will cost £145 at the time of writing with fees frequently changing. Failure to properly complete the student visa application and supply the correct supporting documents can result in the application being refused by the Home Office which will mean that you need to resubmit the application with a new fee. Using an immigration solicitor will mean that the form is properly completed and will reduce the chance of your application being refused by the Home Office.
