Solicitors: what should I know?

Should I meet my solicitor before deciding to hire them?

You should always have an initial chat with the solicitor before hiring them. You might choose to do this over the phone or in person. This meeting is a chance to talk with your prospective solicitor before making a final hiring decision. This is particularly important if you have found your solicitor online, rather than through a recommendation.

When you get Contact Law to put you in touch with a solicitor, we make sure that your initial contact is over the phone. And, if you aren’t happy with your consultation, or the solicitor's costs weren’t right for you, we can try another solicitor. This gives you much greater assurance of getting a good solicitor than choosing a solicitor online.

What sort of questions should I ask a solicitor?

You should find out as much as possible about the solicitor's experience and areas of practice:

  • How long has the solicitor and been practicing?
  • What kinds of legal problems does the solicitor handle most often?
  • Have they handled a case similar to yours?

What, in particular, should I know about fees and costs?

You should ask how are the solicitor's fees are charged:

  • Is it on an hourly basis or a fixed fee for the work involved?
  • Would they consider taking on your case on a 'no win no fee' basis?
  • When must you pay the bill? Can you pay it in instalments?

Make sure that you have a written statement explaining how and what fees will be charged.

Should I meet with several solicitors before settling on one?

Yes. Like selecting any product or service, it is always a good idea to shop around.

The great thing about getting Contact Law to help you is that we have already done the shopping around for you! We have chosen the best solicitors to be on our network, based on their commitment to quality customer service. And, we get feedback from our clients to make sure they are happy with the solicitors we chose for them. So, we only refer you to good quality solicitors.

And, if you want to speak to more than one solicitor, we are happy to organise that for you.
