Motorcycle accident statistics

According to motorcycle accident statistics in 2009, 21,550 motorcyclists were reported casualties on UK roads. Of these unfortunate incidents, 6,049 motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured and 493 died.

It is a common perception that motorcyclists are more risk-taking, dangerous drivers, and are for that reason are more highly represented in accident statistics. However, motorcycle accident statistics reveal that the majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by right-of-way violations, alongside losing control around bends, manoeuvring of motorcycles, and rear-end shunts.

An interesting statistic is that less than 20% of motorcyclist accidents caused by right-of-way violations are caused, either fully or partly, by the motorcyclist. The majority of right-of-way violation motorcycle accidents are primarily the fault of other motorists.

Motorcycle accident statistics reveal a disproportionate rate of serious injury resulting to motorcyclists on UK roads. Motorcyclists make up less than 1% of vehicle traffic in the UK, and yet motorcycle riders suffer approximately 14% of the serious injuries and deaths on UK roads. The rate at which they are seriously injured or killed is approximately twice that of cyclists and over 16 times that of car drivers and passengers.*

If you or a loved one have been injured or died in a motorcycle accident, you can speak to an accidents compensation solicitor about whether you may be able to make a claim for compensation. If your injury was at least partly because of another driver’s negligent driving, you may be able to claim compensation. You may be able to receive compensation for physical, emotional and financial loss suffered now and into the future.
