A copyright is an unregistered right that exists from creation of a certain category of work provided certain criteria are met. Under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 copyright works can only fall into the following categories:

Works must also be created by a UK citizen in order to attract UK copyright. However, citizens of signatory countries to the Bern Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention will also qualify for UK copyright.
