International law and international law solicitors
It is not uncommon that we travel extensively and conduct business abroad. As such, interaction with other countries’ judicial systems and rules occurs frequently and in various instances.
Contact Law works with specialist international law solicitors in the UK, and we also have an extensive network of firms abroad.
As a citizen of the UK you will be aware of the laws and regulations you must comply with to ensure you don’t break the law. International law also applies to you. As the UK is part of the EU, many of the laws and regulations that are enacted in Brussels are now part of UK law. As such you must also ensure you do not break any of these laws.
It is crucial to abide with countries’ laws when you are visiting them or conducting cross-border commercial transactions, such as buying property or running a business. You may need the assistance of a lawyer in another country if you find yourself in a situation where, for instance, you are:
- Buying or selling property
- Applying for citizenship
- Employed in another country
- Inheritance purpose
It is critical to understand the international legal standing of any country you visit, or do business with. Ignorance of a law or regulation is not a defence if you are taken to court.
Commercial legal matters
With the increase in international trade amongst the EU countries and worldwide, you may find you need an international solicitor to help with some aspect of the running of your business. For example, it is becoming more commonplace to import goods from China to sell on in the UK.
Entering into an agreement with a Chinese company may require a specialist in that jurisdiction to advise on:
- The distinctions between the two laws
- Help with the translation between parties
Similarly, you may require an international lawyer to help with protecting your invention in other countries, which requires a specialist patent attorney who has expertise in how this applies internationally.
If you are in any doubt about any points of the international legal system you will come into contact with, always take qualified legal advice. Some cross-border laws can be highly complex. Don’t act if you are unsure whether you or your business will be breaking a national or international law.
Why you need a specialist international lawyer
Many countries have laws that are significantly different from the ones in the UK and having a specialist looking after your best interests is key as it will assure you that all dealings are handled correctly. If you are, for example, buying property in France then a local specialist lawyer can help with the transaction itself and also ensure that you are aware of any tax that needs to be paid and local council regulations.
Contact Law’s network of solicitors stretches beyond the UK and regardless of the nature of your legal matter we can put you in touch with a specialist lawyer with knowledge of the law in France, Spain, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Germany and South Africa.
