Help with Employment Law

With regards to employment law, help can be obtained through various different sources. There are specialist law firms that offer help on a range of matters. Some of these firms charge their clients on an hourly basis. Other firms may charge a fixed fee for dealing with certain types of employment matters. If a solicitor agrees a fixed fee with a client, their fees cannot exceed this fixed fee.

Some law firms may be able to offer clients help on employment law free of charge. This is known as publicly funded work and is often referred to as ‘legal aid’. Not everyone is entitled to legal aid. As a general rule, to be entitled to legal aid you must have savings of less that £16,000 and have little income.

In addition to law firms, employment law help can be sought from trade unions. A trade union is an organisation made up of members, and in which most members are workers or employees. The main objectives of trade unions are to protect and advance the rights and interests of their members. You will usually have to pay a monthly subscription fee in order to become a trade union member, and in return members can get employment law help and advice if they so require it.

Law schools also offer advice and help. However, this is limited to written and oral advice only. If you require someone to represent you at an employment tribunal or court hearing you should instruct a specialist solicitor.
