Family solicitors and cases involving children

The law can be very confusing and complex when it comes to children. There are some laws which seek to regulate the behaviour of children, others were passed with the aim of protecting children, either from their carers or strangers, and of course there are also laws which relate to adoption of children.

There are many situations where one would require a specialist solicitor. Children are protected by different laws depending on their situation. For example, if you wish to adopt a child from another country, there are many different procedures you must go through. These procedures can vary depending on the relevant facts of your case, such as the country the child is from, the age of the child and your relationship to the child (whether you are related or not).

Alternatively, a divorce may raise the need for a solicitor. Children whose parents are split are often heavily influenced by court decisions, and so a divorce solicitor would allow the partners to minimise the negative consequences of the divorce. The court usually does not make an order for custody unless the parents cannot agree on a compromise, but in those cases when the court is asked to make an order, the support of a divorce solicitor could also improve your chances of success. Cases where child maintenance is in dispute could also benefit from a solicitor. Children (and the parent they live with) are commonly owed maintenance payments from the other parent, but the amount of those payments is not always clear cut.
