Environmental lawyer
Environmental lawyers exist in all areas of law and the quantity of lawyers that specialise solely in environmental law is actually quite small. The nature of environmental law is that it permeates most areas of law, so lawyers that specialise in housing law, corporate law, personal injury law or criminal law, for example, will also be experts in the environmental aspects of those areas of law. In fact, it is difficult to think of an area of law where there are no environmental considerations. The environmental lawyers that specifically focus on environmental issues such as pollution or emissions without context are therefore comparatively few.
The environmental lawyer has one of the most difficult jobs in the legal field. Not only is environmental law incredibly complex, it can be found in a wealth of different places. Law and policy is made internationally, domestically and within Europe. Cases are decided in every type of court in the land and therefore reported in an equally wide range of places. In addition to this, many environmental laws are passed by statutory instrument, usually by local government. There is certainly no comprehensive list of laws on the environment and a person with a query in this area would be well advised to enlist the help of a specialist solicitor. When selecting your solicitor you will need to consider the area of expertise that you need information on and whether the issue of environmental law is integral to another issue. If the environmental information you need advice on is domestic, you may instruct a solicitor without experience of international environmental law, but many environmental issues transcend national boundaries and it is worth considering this when instructing a solicitor.
