Environmental law firms

An environmental law firm is a law firm that deals with environmental legal matters. If you have an environmental issue then it is advised that you gain some legal advice from a specialist environmental solicitor. A solicitor is able to use their expert knowledge and experience to assist you in solving your case or providing useful advice on your environmental problem.

The environment is defined as the air, water and land. Problems that arise in these areas are matters which an environmental law firm can provide advice on. For example, if your neighbours are causing a nuisance to you or your neighbourhood, whether it be noise, air pollution such as smoke from bonfires, fly tipping or dog mess you have legal rights which you can invoke to prevent these actions from occurring. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 a local authority has the power to take action where a statutory nuisance has taken place. If you require advice on whether your neighbour’s nuisance constitutes a statutory violation then you should speak to a solicitor who can advise you on how to take action.

One course of action available against a neighbour who is causing a nuisance is to make a complaint to the environmental department of your local council. Environmental health officers can investigate complaints made to local councils. If you have reported a noise nuisance then an environmental health officer will assess whether the level of noise you are experiencing is unreasonable, for example if it is affecting your sleep. If you are unhappy that your local council has not taken the appropriate action on your behalf then you can apply for an action in the magistrates’ court.
