Employment solicitors

Employment law is a unique area of the law and one in which many solicitors specialise. Employment law governs relationships in the workplace, through a combination of contract law and statutory rights, with many of these rights having their origins in European Community law. It is heavily regulated area of the law and a special body, the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), has been appointed to ensure better employment relations. Acas is largely funded by the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS), and is a non-departmental body governed by an independent council.

Employment solicitors are used for all areas of employment law, but the most common work in this area of law is done regarding unfair and wrongful dismissal, sex, race and disability discrimination, trade union work and redundancies. Employment matters can arise at any stage in the working relationship - from recruitment advertising, interviews, day-to-day employer and employee relationships as well as dismissals.

If you have an employment claim then you should speak to an employment solicitor as soon as possible as there are limitation dates imposed by statue preventing claims being brought after a certain number of years. Alternatively, some cases such as redundancy require that a claim is only brought after a certain number of years of continuous employment with that particular employer. If you have been offered a settlement agreement then be sure to consult an employment solicitor before signing this (or any other form of agreement from your employer) as it may prevent you from implementing any of your rights.
