Did You Have A Road Accident Today?

If you have just had a road accident today you may be wondering what steps to take. Whether you were at fault or not, there are certain steps that you should keep in mind:

  • Stop at the scene of the accident

You are legally required to stop at the scene of an accident if somebody is injured, if there's damage to a vehicle or property, if an animal has been killed or injured or if a fixed object such as a fence has been damaged

  • Exchange details

When someone involved in an accident asks for your contact details, the law states that you must hand them over, and vice versa. Take down the name, address, telephone number, registration number and insurance details of any other drivers involved

  • Inform the police

If someone has been injured, if one of the drivers is unable to produce an insurance certificate at the scene of the accident or if you are unable to swap details with the other driver at the scene of the accident then you must inform the police

  • Take notes of details of the accident

Always try to take down the details of the vehicles involved, what time the accident occurred, weather conditions, estimated speeds of the vehicles, the number of passengers in the vehicles, witnesses and any damage or injury caused
If you had a road accident today, you will also need to consider the possibility of compensation.

  • If your property damage or injury was at least partly because of another driver's negligent driving, you may be able to claim compensation. If other road or environmental factors contributed to the accident, such as poorly maintained roads or unmarked hazards, you may have a claim against the local authority.
