Accident rates

Transport accident rates in the UK have fallen considerably over the last 25 years. The fatality accident rates for both cars and vans have more than halved. Air, rail and bus or coach fatality accident rates have always been relatively low, but have also shown a general downward trend. The fatality accident rate for pedestrians has fallen by more than half. The motorcycle fatality accident rate has remained relatively unchanged.

The transport accident rate between 2007 and 2008 decreased significantly. The number of deaths among car users in 2008 was 1,257, 12 per cent less than in the previous year. The reported number of seriously injured people fell by seven per cent to 10,711. Total reported casualties among car users were 149,188 - eight per cent lower than 2007.

These are positive trends. However, they still do not detract from the fact that there were 170,591 road accidents reported to the police involving personal injury in the UK in 2009. 28,572 people were killed or seriously injured in road accidents in the UK, with 2,538 of that number killed*.

When accidents do happen to someone we know they can have devastating consequences. They can completely cripple a person’s life, not just physically, but emotionally and financially.
